Letter of Prof. Dr. György Benedek, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Szeged to Timisoara

I have great pleasure in informing you about a successful INTERREG grant application of the Institute of Surgical Research of our Faculty, and the "Pius Brânzeu" Training Center at the University of Timisoara. The project entitled "Cooperative telemedicine and teaching program in the regional higher education" is just about to start, and I do hope that our Universities shall be able to utilize its bilateral advantages.

The first aim of this program is development of an info-communication system that will create a common basis to a steady access to information (e.g. shared educational databases, on-line connections between Szeged and Timisoara for e-learning, organization of joint symposia during the next students' scientific congresses, etc.).

Secondly, by joining to the successful mirror Phare project of the "Pius Brânzeu" Training Center, we can now provide access to practical courses for your 3rd year medical students. In these skills courses, the Institute of Surgical Research introduces surgical principles and techniques (A modules), monitoring skills (B modules) and advanced interventions (C modules) such as minimally invasive surgery, appendectomy, intestinal resection or thoracocentesis to interested students. These procedures are taught in simulated real-life, clinical surroundings and circumstances in the skills laboratory of this institute, and the combination of these modules may be very worthy for those students who are seeking a career choice in those specialties in which expertise in surgical anatomy is critical. The course materials may be downloaded from the website http://web.szote.u-szeged.hu/expsur/

In this scheme we would be happy to welcome a group of 10-12 medical students from Timisoara in the 1st semester of 2007/08 (between September 01 and November 30, 2007) and further groups in the 2nd semester. The condensed form of courses A, B and C will be presented during 2-3 days periods, when free lodging and meals will be provided to them.

I would like to ask you to spread this information within its target group - Dr. Mihai Ionac and Dr. Mihaly Boros, head of the Institute of Surgical Research will be happy to contact you directly with further details. I am convinced that running of such practical courses provides an exceptional possibility to strengthen our cooperation, and I do hope that many of our students will benefit from this partnership program.
